Why Sharing Your ID with Amazon is Necessary ?
Shopping on Amazon India offers a vast selection of products, daily deals, and discounts, making it an exciting platform for customers. Typically, you can simply choose an item, add payment details, and wait for it to arrive. However, there are instances where you may be required to provide identification to proceed with your purchase. Wondering when and why Amazon requires your ID? Here’s what you need to know.
When Importing Products into India
Amazon’s global platform allows you to import items from other countries. For customs clearance in India, identity verification is necessary when purchasing products from an international Amazon portal.
When ordering from abroad, products go through multiple stages before reaching you in India. Verification checks occur at each stage as the item crosses international borders. Once the order arrives in India, customs require ID proof for clearance. Without it, your order won’t clear customs or other stages in the shipping process. Therefore, Amazon requests your ID at checkout.
Here’s what you need to do when placing an international order:
- Upload your KYC (Know Your Customer) documents—your ID proof—while placing your order.
- If not uploaded at checkout, it must be submitted within 48 hours. Failure to do so will lead to order cancellation.
- Accepted IDs for KYC are Aadhar Card, PAN Card, Passport, or Voter ID only.
- Invalid IDs or unclear uploads will not be accepted.
- Orders are canceled if a valid, clear ID is not uploaded within 48 hours.
- If you have previously provided your ID to Amazon Pay India Private Limited and allowed Amazon Pay to share it with Amazon, you won’t need to upload it again.
- Certain countries may require additional documents for verification. This information may be provided directly to the courier service during shipment.
For example, importing from Taiwan requires real name authentication via the Taiwan Customs EZ WAY app. Orders from Korea need a Personal Customs Clearance Code (PCCC) on Korea’s Customs Service website. Without these, items won’t clear customs in those countries.
Importing items from Amazon can be more complex than domestic purchases in India. Amazon assures customers that personal information is used solely for customs clearance and shipping, and it is stored securely.
If you’re concerned about your information’s safety, you can delete it from your account. Go to your account, select Manage Saved IDs, choose the ID, and delete it. Amazon will permanently delete the data from their database after 30 days. If Amazon hasn’t used your information for over 90 days, they will automatically delete it from both your account and their database.
Using Amazon Pay
If you plan to use Amazon Pay, KYC verification is required before you can access your Amazon Pay balance. To complete this verification, you’ll need to:
- Upload a selfie and a photo of your PAN card.
- Verify Aadhar details and complete KYC via video call with an Amazon agent.
If you don’t have an Aadhar card, PAN card details alone are sufficient for KYC.
Applying for an Amazon Pay ICICI Bank Credit Card
For the Amazon Pay ICICI Bank credit card, complete KYC through either:
- Video KYC – provide your PAN and optionally Aadhar details during a video call with an agent, who may ask additional questions.
- In-Person KYC – schedule an appointment with a bank agent who will visit and verify your ID (Driving License, Aadhar Card, Passport, or Voter ID). If your Aadhar lacks your date of birth, you’ll need to provide a PAN card. Income documents will also be required.
